Understanding The Sadie Family, Columella, Swartland, Coastal Region
There are about six grape varieties in this wine, led by Syrah. The grapes are sourced from premium vineyards within the Swartland region of South Africa. Swartland's soils feature granite, slate, gravel and sandstone formations and these conditions combined with a Mediterranean climate create the ideal environment for cultivating grapes of unparalleled quality. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in open concrete fermenters for about 21 days which is followed by maceration for three weeks to tease out flavour depth. The wine ages for 12 months on lees in French oak, the majority of which is old. After the sediment is removed, it matures for a further year on fine lees for texture and complexity. The wine is bolted unfined and unfiltered to preserve vintage and terroir expression. The Sadie Family Wines Columella features dark fruit, spicy hints and subtle tobacco in a smooth, velvety palate. This wine has considerable ageing potential.
