Understanding Escarpment, Kupe Pinot Noir, Martinborough, Wairarapa

Cultivated in the esteemed Martinborough Terrace, the Escarpment vineyards enjoy a unique microclimate, characterised by cool nights and long, dry summers, which are ideal for the cultivation of Pinot Noir grapes. The Kupe vineyard features older vines that bring intensity and complexity to the wine. The soil composition, rich in ancient riverbed gravels, imparts a distinctive minerality to the grapes. The winemaking approach for the Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir prioritises gentle handling and minimal intervention. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with natural yeasts in open-top fermenters for optimal temperature control. The wine ages for about 19 months in part-new French oak, crafting wine with ripe flavours and full tannins. It’s bottled without fining or filtration to encourage terroir expression. Escarpment Kupe Pinot Noir displays ripe cherry, earthy undertones, floral notes and smoky oak in a layered palate with silky tannins. This wine has considerable ageing potential.
