Understanding Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir, Martinborough, Wairarapa
The vineyards are some of the winery’s oldest and are located in the Martinborough Terrace, benefiting from a cool climate and stony, free-draining soils that create an ideal environment for cultivating Pinot Noir grapes with concentrated flavours and elegant structure. The region's unique climate, marked by cool nights and long sunny days, contributes significantly to the development of the grape's nuanced flavours and balanced acidity. Grapes are hand-selected and part whole-bunch fermented with natural yeasts, allowing the natural characteristics of Pinot Noir to shine. The wine ages in 35% new French oak for 11 months, which contributes to its complexity and imparts subtle notes of spice and earthiness, complementing the natural fruit flavours without dominating them. Ata Rangi Pinot Noir displays red and dark fruit, hints of thyme and floral notes in a beautifully structured palate with silky tannins. This wine has excellent ageing potential.
