Understanding Kumeu River, Mates Vineyard Chardonnay, Kumeu, Auckland
The Maté’s Vineyard is distinguished by its clay soils and mature vines, which contribute to the depth and concentration of flavours in the Chardonnay grapes. The vineyard's microclimate, marked by cool temperatures and gentle breezes, is ideal for slow and even ripening of the grapes. This results in a wine with great acidity and flavor intensity. Grapes are hand-harvested to ensure the finest quality and whole-bunch pressed to encourage fruit purity. Fermentation takes place in 100% oak with natural yeasts then undergoes softening malolactic fermentation ahead of 11 months of ageing. These steps add subtle notes of spice and vanilla without overpowering the intrinsic fruit flavours. Kumeu River Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay displays delicate citrus and stone fruit and nuances of toasted almond and brioche in a creamy, layered, refined palate with crisp acidity. This Chardonnay is known for its potential to age gracefully.
