Understanding Kumeu River, Hunting Hill Chardonnay, Kumeu, Auckland
The vineyard for Hunting Hill was planted in 1982 on gently sloping terrain and clay-rich soil, providing an ideal environment for growing Chardonnay grapes. The maritime climate of the Kumeu region contributes to a longer growing season, allowing the grapes to develop a nuanced flavour profile. In the winery, the grapes are hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed then barrel fermented with natural yeast. The process concludes with softening malolactic fermentation and 11 months of ageing in barrel which adds subtle toastiness and enhances the wine's textural qualities. Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay features citrus, stone fruit and hints of flint and smoke in a creamy, toasty palate with fresh vibrancy. This wine has considerable cellaring potential.
