Understanding M. Chapoutier, Saint-Joseph, Granits Blanc, Rhone
The Les Granits vineyard's distinctive feature is its ancient, decomposed granite soils, which play a crucial role in defining the character of the Marsanne grapes. These soils provide excellent drainage and help stress the vines, leading to the production of grapes with concentrated flavours and a pronounced mineral edge. The vineyard's ideal orientation and microclimate further contribute to the grapes' ripeness and aromatic complexity. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, ensuring a balance of flavour and acidity. Cold settling ensures fruit purity. Fermentation occurs in a combination of vats and large oak barrels. This is followed by separate maturation on lees for eight to 10 months ahead of blending before bottling. M. Chapoutier Saint-Joseph Les Granits Blanc displays ripe orchard fruit, almond, honeysuckle and stony minerality in a full-bodied, creamy palate with balancing acidity. This wine possesses great ageing potential.
