Understanding Yann Chave, Hermitage, Rhone

This prestigious wine features Syrah, sourced from two parcels. These are the esteemed Baumes (next to the celebrated Le Méal) and a prized plot in Péléat. The vines, whose average age is 30 years, benefit from the rich and well-drained granite soils of Hermitage. These vineyards are meticulously cared for with a commitment to sustainable farming practices, reflecting Chave's philosophy of minimal intervention. Harvest tends to take place late to enhance the flavour richness of the grapes. Fermentation methods encourage deep and pure fruit expression. The wine is then aged in large oak barrels, a size that ensures the oak complements rather than overpowers Syrah's intrinsic qualities. Yann Chave Hermitage displays dark berry, smoky undertones and black pepper in a silky palate with fine tannins. This wine offers impressive ageing potential.
