Understanding M. Sorrel, Hermitage, Le Greal, Rhone

The vineyard for Greal is characterised by its prime location on Hermitage Hill, where the interplay of microclimate, soil composition and age-old viticulture techniques contribute to the distinctive qualities of the grapes. The vineyard's rich, granite, limestone, sand and clay soils and optimal sun exposure create an ideal environment for the Syrah vines to develop concentrated flavours. A small quantity of old-vine Marsanne is also used in this blend. Grapes are hand-selected and sorted. The Marsanne is whole cluster fermented to tease out richness. The wine ages in used French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, a mix of new and old, to enhance complexity while preserving the Syrah's vibrant fruit character. Greal features dark fruit, violet, spice and a hint of graphite, leading to an elegant palate with silky tannins, contributing to the wine's impressive structure and cellaring potential.
