Understanding M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, Chante-Alouette, Rhone
Chante-Alouette is made from fruit from three vineyards, characterised by varied soils, including loess, clay and limestone. The Marsanne grapes thrive in this environment, developing a rich palette of flavours and a well-rounded acidity. The age of the vines adds an extra dimension of depth and concentration to the grapes. M. Chapoutier's approach in crafting the Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette focuses on precise terroir expression. The winemaking process involves gentle pressing of the grapes and fermentation in a mix of stainless-steel tanks and oak barrels. Lees stirring takes place to add texture to the wine. Ageing is in a combination of stainless steel and part-new oak. Chante-Alouette exhibits ripe stone fruit, honey, almond and citrus in a full-bodied palate balanced by crisp acidity. This wine has excellent ageing potential.
