Understanding M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, Le Meal Rouge, Rhone
Le Méal vineyard boasts old vines planted on terraced hillsides composed of shingles and clay soils. These conditions are ideal for the cultivation of Syrah, contributing to the grapes' ripeness and concentration. The Marsanne grapes, though used sparingly, add a touch of complexity and finesse to the wine. Grapes are hand-picked, destemmed and vinified in concrete to promote fruity concentration. High temperatures soak out grape characteristics and create soft tannins for a rounded structure. The wine is aged in a mix of new and used oak casks, for 14 to 18 months, a stage that develops subtle oak influence without overshadowing the intrinsic qualities of the grapes. Le Méal presents ripe red and black fruit, spice, pepper, liquorice and vanilla hints in a smooth, rich, full-bodied palate with well-integrated tannins. This wine has outstanding cellaring potential.
