Understanding M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, Les Greffieux, Rhone
Le Greffieux's vineyard features a unique terroir with its deep, glacial alluvial, shingles and clay soils. These conditions allow for a more vigorous growth of the Syrah vines, resulting in grapes that are full-bodied and rich in flavour. The microclimate of the area, characterised by warm days and cooler nights, further contributes to the development of the grapes' complex aromatics and flavour depth. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. Fruit is destemmed and undergoes fermentation in cement vats to support flavour purity. Extended maceration gently teases out tannins. The wine ages in oak casks, a third of which are new, for up to 18 months, imparting subtle woody notes that complement the Syrah grape flavours. The wine is bottled unfined for deep terroir expression. Ermitage Le Gréffieux displays ripe dark fruit, spice, cocoa and earthiness in a robust palate with smooth tannins. This wine is known for its remarkable ageing potential.
