Understanding Delas, Hermitage, Domaine des Tourettes Rouge, Rhone
The grapes for Hermitage Les Tourettes are sourced from select vineyards dispersed across three villages. A combination of granite, schist and alluvial soils nourish the fruit, teasing out Syrah’s trademark intensity. Vines face south, a feature which further enhances flavour concentration in the grapes. The winemaking process for Les Tourettes involves careful hand harvesting and sorting so that only the best fruit is vinified. Up to 15% of Marsanne and Rousanne is permitted in the wine if the vigneron chooses. Vinification takes place in open concrete vats after two days of cold pre-fermentation maceration, steps that promotes fruit purity. Fermentation is temperature-controlled to preserve flavour and tannin balance. This Hermitage is aged in a combination of new and old oak, the proportion of which is adapted to each vintage. This red displays black fruit, spice and leather in a silky palate with tightly knit tannins. It has the potential for a decade of cellaring.
