Understanding M. Chapoutier, Cote Rotie, Les Becasses, Rhone
The vineyards of Côte-Rôtie are famed for their challenging terrain, with steep inclines and a diverse soil composition, primarily consisting of mica-schist and iron-rich minerals. These conditions stress the vines, resulting in low yields but grapes of exceptional quality and intensity. The Bécasses vineyard benefits from this unique terroir, offering grapes with deep flavors and an inherent elegance. Grapes are destemmed to promote fruit concentration and structural balance and then vinified in concrete tanks with natural yeast for rich terroir expression. Extraction techniques tease out flavour and tannins and temperatures are controlled for excellent integration of the grapes’ features. The wine ages for up to 16 months in majority-new oak and stainless steel to preserve fruit purity and floral Viognier notes. Bécasses presents ripe dark fruit, smoked meat, black pepper and floral undertones on a powerful and graceful palate with smooth tannins. This red has excellent cellaring potential.
