Understanding Francois Villard, Cote Rotie, La Brocarde, Rhone
Brocarde, taking its name from the eponymous lieu-dit, is crafted primarily from Syrah growing on the esteemed Cote Blonde, the signature grape of the Côte-Rôtie. A small but significant inclusion of Viognier adds elegance and aromatic complexity. The vines are rooted in soils composed of schist and granite, contributing to the wine’s notable minerality and structure. Francois Villard's approach to winemaking in the Brocarde emphasises the expression of varietal and terroir characteristics. The grapes undergo a thorough selection process to ensure only the best fruit is used. Grapes are partly whole-cluster fermented to carefully balance fruit profile and tannins. The wine matures in 80- to 100% new French oak, depending on the vintage, a step that adds complexity. Brocarde features dark fruit, florals, spice and mineraltiy in a refined palate characterised by silky tannins. This wine promises great potential for development with cellaring.
