The Syrah vines for this Côte-Rôtie extend over three villages with steep, sun-drenched terraced plots boasting a blend of iron schist and granite soils. The terroir enhances the flavour concentration in the fruit, a quality that’s teased out in the winery. Following tradition, this wine is led by the Syrah grape with a small portion of Viognier permitted to add body and texture. Fruit is harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal maturity. Vinification follows tradition in open concrete vats after two days of cold pre-fermentation maceration, a step that promotes fruit purity. Controlled temperature fermentation teases out the distinct characteristics of the fruit for greater nuance. Maturation occurs in a combination of new and old oak. A classic example of robustness and finesse, Côte-Rôtie Seigneur Maugiron displays silky black and red fruit, liquorice and light oak in a tight tannic structure. This wine can be cellared for several years, allowing its flavours to evolve and mature.
