Understanding Clusel Roch, Cote Rotie, La Vialliere, Rhone
The grapes for Côte-Rôtie Viallière are sourced from the acclaimed Viallière lieu-dit, known for its unique terroir of schist and iron-rich soils that impart richness to the fruit. These older, low-yielding vines produce fruit of exceptional quality and flavour concentration. The vineyard's optimal exposure ensures the grapes reach perfect ripeness and manual ploughing promotes vine health. A blend of traditional and modern techniques is standard in the winery. Hand-picked fruit undergoes careful sorting and is then fermented with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled vats. These processes encourage aromatic purity and a unique expression of the Syrah grape. The wine is typically aged for two years in oak barrels, a portion of which is new. Côte-Rôtie Viallière boasts a complex bouquet of dark berry, violet, smoked meat and a hint of black pepper with silky tannins and a long, lingering finish. Precise and masterful winemaking promotes longevity and evolution in the bottle.
