Understanding Domaine Pierre Usseglio, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, de Mon Aieul, Rhone
Mon Aieul is crafted from vines growing across several Châteauneuf-du-Pape parcels that feature diverse soils that play a significant role in the quality of the grapes. The old Grenache vines, deeply rooted in this unique terroir, yield grapes that are rich in flavour and character. Fruit is meticulously hand-harvested and sorted, ensuring only the best quality is used. Bunches are destemmed to prevent astringency and grapes macerate in concrete for 30 to 40 days to tease out fruit depth. During fermentation, extraction methods occur to ensure rich concentration and colour intensity. The wine ages in concrete for 18 months, a stage that promotes the integration of its features and supports a powerful fruit presence. Mon Aieul displays dark fruit interlaced with garrigue, spice and a hint of leather all framed by powerful, refined tannins and balancing acidity. Mon Aieul has the capacity for decades of cellaring.
