Understanding Clos Saint Jean, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Sanctus Sanctorum, Rhone
The grapes for Sanctus Sanctorum are sourced from a select parcel within the La Crau vineyard. This plot is renowned for its heat-retentive Galets Roulés (large, smooth pebbles) and red clay soil which impart a rich minerality and concentration to the wine. The age of the vines, coupled with the unique terroir, results in low yields of intensely flavoured grapes resulting in top-quality wine. The wine is typically aged in demi-muids (large oak barrels) which promotes subtle oak notes while allowing the Grenache purity to shine. Sanctus Sanctorum displays lush red fruits and delicate floral notes underpinned by hints of spice, leather and earth. The palate is rich yet masterfully balanced, marked by a silky texture and a lingering, resonant finish. This wine’s ageing potential is exceptional, with its depth and complexity evolving gracefully over many years.
