Understanding Nicolas Joly, Savennieres Coulee-de-Serrant, Loire
The Coulee de Serrant vineyard, a monopole of Nicolas Joly, spans over a mere seven hectares, planted with vines that are up to 80 years old. The vineyard's unique aspect on steep slopes and its rich schist soils contribute to the exceptional quality of the grapes. A biodynamic approach to viticulture results in a wine with a distinct personality and complexity. Grapes are harvested semi-late and contain small quantities of botrytis, both features that add to the character of this wine. Pickers make three passes through the vineyard for top grape selection and keep yields low for quality. Vinification occurs in oak, with minimal new wood so as not to mask the rich flavours of this wine. Some lees ageing adds texture. Coulee de Serrant displays ripe apple, quince and hints of herbal tea in a rich palate balanced by vibrant minerality and acidity. The wine promises excellent ageing potential.
