An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Vougeot Premier Cru, Les Petits Vougeots Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

Located within the Côte de Nuits sub-region of northern Burgundy, Les Petits Vougeots is one of the four Premier Cru climats in the Vougeot appellation, located towards its northern end, close to the border of Chambolle-Musigny and Les Amoreuses. The soil is composed predominantly of limestone, with much less clay than in other parts of the Côte de Nuit. The topsoil is loose and shallow, covering a bed of free-draining, marled subsoil. These characteristics lead to reduced vigour, and subsequent concentration and depth of flavour in the grapes. The vineyard is mainly planted with Pinot Noir, and the resulting reds are praised for their silky finesse, minerality and drive. The climat also plays host to some Chardonnay plantings.

The Domaine Fourrier Les Petits Vougeots Vielles Vignes is produced from 100% Pinot Nor vines with a minimum age of 30 years. During vinification, the goal is to preserve the character and purity of the fruit, in lieu of any attempts to affect or alter it. The wine is matured for 18-20 months in old oak barrels, eschewing racking or filtration in an effort to conserve and concentrate flavour. The wine has received much praise from noted critics, with Tim Atkin MW awarding high scores to the 2016, 2018 and 2020 vintages.
