Les Gaudichots is a Premier Cru climat in the Vosne-Romanée appellation of the Côte de Nuits sub-region in eastern France’s renowned Burgundy wine region. In addition to its Premier Cru status Burgundy, a small area of Les Gaudichots is dedicated to Village wines. This small 2.5-hectare Pinot Noir climat is often called the ‘little brother’ of its neighbour, the acclaimed Grand Cru vineyard, La Tâche with which it shares common history. The two vineyards also have similar soils and, although the Les Gaudichots terrain does quite not reach the standard of the mighty La Tâche, its quality is highly esteemed. This old-vine Domaine Forey Père et Fils displays ripe red and black fruit with distinct hints of plum, violet, anise and sandalwood. Rounded with a touch of sweetness and pleasing rustic tannins, this Les Gaudichots has a brush of minerality that enhances its rich core and echoes in a warm, grainy finish. Owing to its size and complicated naming regulations, Les Gaudichots is rarely found in the market.

Domaine Forey Père et Fils cultivates Pinot Noir vines planted in 1930. The vines benefit from the east-facing steep clay-limestone slopes of Les Gaudichots, an aspect and incline that encourages slow and steady grape ripening. Biodiversity is encouraged in the land so the use of artificial chemicals is kept to a minimum. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard to ensure that only the finest quality fruit reaches the winery and to prevent damaging oxidation prior to vinification. Following cold-soaking and fermentation, this Premier Cru wine maturates in 228-litre barriques for increased oak-to-wine contact. The percentage of new oak varies from vintage to vintage. For full terroir and vintage expression, no fining or filtering takes place before bottling. Burghound has described this Les Gaudichots as both ‘terrific’ and ‘outstanding’.
