Understanding Domaine Forey Pere & Fils, Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru, Les Petits Monts, Burgundy
Domaine Forey Père et Fils cultivates one-fifth of a hectare in this highly esteemed, steep east-facing vineyard with stony, clay-limestone soils rich in iron. The terrain is well-draining, a feature that prevents vine vigour, directing nutrients to fewer grapes, resulting in better concentration. The Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1970. With a focus on promoting biodiversity, the use of chemicals is reduced to a minimum. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard prior to vinification. Following cold-soaking and fermentation, this Premier Cru wine matures in 228-litre barriques for increased oak-to-wine contact. The percentage of new oak varies depending on the vintage. No fining or filtration takes place so the wine can capture and reveal the unique terroir and vintage expression at its core.
