Planted entirely with Pinot Noir, Les Mitans is a Premier Cru vineyard site situated below the village of Volnay in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. Its gentle slopes at around 250m in altitude are facing east and south-east. They are rich in clay with some limestone and gravel. With a network of growers across Burgundy’s best sites, Maison Roche de Bellene decides which parcels to use for each vintage, often selecting fruit from more than one plot. The Maison’s emphasis is on sustainable and organic farming. The fruit or base wine come from old vines, planted on south and south-east-facing soils rich in clay and limestone at an elevation of 230m.

Understanding Maison Roche de Bellene, Volnay Premier Cru, Les Mitans, Burgundy
The cuvée is made from hand-harvested and carefully selected Pinot Noir grapes. A proportion of whole bunches is used during the indigenous yeast fermentation, followed by up to 14 months oak maturation (around 20% new oak). Often bottled filtered but unfined (vintage dependant), the sensitive use of new oak allows the fruit to shine through. As a result, this Les Mitans is fragrant with a red and black fruit profile and an underlying savouriness. Usually ready to open after several years, the wine rewards cellaring for up to 10 years.
