Domaine Francois Buffet, Volnay Premier Cru, Champans, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine Francois Buffet, Volnay Premier Cru, Champans, Burgundy
The Premier Cru Volnay Champans by Domaine Francois Buffet is sourced from a plot of old Pinot Noir vines, situated on the mid-slope of the Premier Cru Champans vineyard. The thin, pebbly soil of the domaine’s parcel encourages deep vine root penetration, yielding small berries of great intensity that display clear terroir character. This cuvée from Domaine Francois Buffet shows the classic Champans texture and firmness on the mid-palate, with the aromatic lift quintessential to all the best wines of Volnay.

Understanding Domaine Francois Buffet, Volnay Premier Cru, Champans, Burgundy
The vines for the Domaine Francois Buffet Volnay Champans are farmed with a focus on sustainability. The grapes are hand-harvested and partially destemmed (because the vines are suitably mature, Marc-Olivier Buffet uses 30% whole bunch for this cuvée) into old oak foudres where fermentation occurs. Following pressing, the wine is matured for up to 22 months in French oak barrels, approximately 20% of which are new. The result is highly expressive, showing lots of fruit character both on the nose and the palate, with good tannic grip and persistence. This is a wine for mid-term drinking but will cellar well under the right conditions.
