Santenots is a ‘Cru apart’ in Meursault, which is legally entitled to the Volnay Premier Cru, due its location in the extension of the Caillerets and Chevrets parts of the commune. The vineyard is ideally situated on a small high flat area. The estate’s vines were planted in 1954 on over 2,700 square meters. Santenots can produce opulent and ample wines but in the higher areas closer to Caillerets – where Buissson-Charles’ plot is located – the wines express more of the ethereal and nimble typicity associated with the commune, blending fresh red fruit with a distinct mineral edge.

These Pinot Noir vines are farmed organically, and hand-selected after harvest. Harvest is done at the precise point of maturity, giving a classical ripeness of red fruits. The must is fermented and aged for 17 months in barrels less than five years old, some with 30% new wood, giving the wine hints of exotic spice. Buisson-Charles Volnay-Santenots boasts a profound energy, complex minerality and a consistently long finish vintage after vintage. According to Allen Meadows of Burghound, this Volnay-Santenots is ‘more like a Caillerets than a classically rich and generous Santenots’.
