Benjamin Leroux, Volnay Premier Cru, Les Mitans, Burgundy
An introduction to Benjamin Leroux, Volnay Premier Cru, Les Mitans, Burgundy
The Volnay Les Mitans cuvée by Benjamin Leroux comes from a 0.65-hectare plot of Pinot Noir vines in the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Mitans just east of the village of Volnay. The specific plot lies within the En l’Ormeau lieu-dit, but Benjamin prefers to bottle under the name Les Mitans. The iron-rich clay subsoil and free-draining gravelly topsoil combine to produce a wine of great elegance, with the characteristic perfume of Premier Cru Volnay and good breadth on the palate.

Understanding Benjamin Leroux, Volnay Premier Cru, Les Mitans, Burgundy
The wine is sourced from a plot of 50-year-old sustainably farmed vines on the upper slope of the Les Mitans appellation. The grapes are hand-harvested and mostly destemmed (some clusters remain intact) prior to fermentation in tank. After a 15-day-maceration and light pressing, the wine is transferred to mostly neutral French oak barrels (20% of which are new), where élevage is conducted for 18 months. This is a sophisticated example of Premier Cru Volnay, showing notes of cocoa and black cherry and a fine-grained tannic structure.
