An introduction to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, La Chateniere, Burgundy

La Chatenière is a Premier Cru climat within the Saint-Aubin appellation. The vineyard lies on a sheltered southwest-facing slope above the extended village of Gamay. Benefitting from almost all-day-round sunshine, these are among the earliest ripening grapes in the region imbuing the wines with greater richness. Perhaps lacking the fame of many of its neighbours, these wines usually represent incredibly good value. Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin ‘La Chatenière’ comes from a sheltered 0.86ha plot split across three parcels on limestone rich pebbly marl soils. All are sheltered sites with excellent sun exposure and the grapes are usually harvested earlier than those of other sites. La Chatenière is often the richest of Colin-Morey’s Saint-Aubin, with the charm of his more famous crus at more accessible prices. The wine could be approached young but will age beautifully for 10+ years.

Understanding Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, La Chateniere, Burgundy

Made from Chardonnay, this wine is a blend of grapes coming from three south facing parcels of sustainably farmed old vine vineyards. Hand-picked and fermented using indigenous yeasts in 350 litre demi-muids (up to 30% new oak) with an extended élevage of up to 16 months without lees stirring, fining or filtration before bottling, this wine has huge concentration and charm. Slightly warmer than the Champlots site, La Chatenière tends to offer greater depth. Its 2011 vintage ranked among Wine Spectator’s top 100 wines of 2013.
