An introduction to Maison Louis Latour, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Folatieres, Burgundy

Les Folatières is a Premier Cru Chardonnay vineyard with an impressive pedigree typical of its location. It is situated in the renowned Puligny-Montrachet appellation of the Côte de Beaune subregion in Burgundy’s Côte d'Or. At 17.6 hectares, it is the largest Premier Cru vineyard in Puligny-Montrachet. White Burgundy from Les Folatières is widely regarded as rivalling the quality of nearby Grand Cru offerings. The name is in reference to an old French word meaning “haunted by wisps”. The acclaimed Les Folatières vineyard benefits from the nourishing limestone and clay soils in which Chardonnay thrives. The Domaine Louis Latour Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières boasts exotic guava and lychee in a mouth of orange, apple and white florals, closing to a rich, buttery finish. This Premier Cru is suitable for five to seven years of laying down.

Understanding Maison Louis Latour, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Folatieres, Burgundy

Supporting the domaine’s sensitivity to the environment, it farms its old-vine Chardonnay in Les Folatières sustainably on rocky marl-limestone soils. The site’s eastern exposure that veers slightly to the north aspect benefits the fruit with gentle, steady sunlight for gradual, balanced ripening and finessed wine. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Premier Cru sees traditional fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 50% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for eight to ten months to allow components to deepen for increased complexity.
