An introduction to Louis Latour, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Sous le Puits, Burgundy

Sous le Puits is a walled Premier Cru Chardonnay vineyard in the Blagny area of Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy, eastern France. Situated at almost 400 metres above sea level, Sous le Puits can be found at the very top of the hill of Blagny. It covers 6.8 hectares on steep and stony terrain. The name of this spot means “under the well”. White wines from Sous le Puits and its neighbours typically display crisp minerality, a reflection of both altitude and soils. This site emerged in the mid-20th century when scrubland was converted to vineland. The Domaine Louis Latour Puligny-Montrachet Sous le Puits boasts yellow fruit, almond paste and pleasing woody tones in a fresh palate with hints of grilled almonds. It has the potential to develop in the cellar for five to seven years.

Understanding Louis Latour, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Sous le Puits, Burgundy

Supporting the domaine’s environmental approach, old-vine Chardonnay in Sous le Puits is farmed sustainably on clay-limestone soils. The site’s southeasterly aspect rewards the vineyard with steady sunlight for gradual, balanced ripening. To preserve the quality of the fruit, a highly selective manual harvest ensures that only the finest grapes are vinified. With traditional fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation, the wine has a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 50% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for eight to ten months to allow components to unfurl for greater depth and complexity.
