An introduction to Louis Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Referts, Burgundy
Les Referts is the closest area to Meursault’s esteemed Premier Cru Charmes, divided by the famous ‘Chemin des Moînes’ (the monks' path). Today, the Carillon plot has 52-year-old vines located just below Les Combettes, and at the limit of Meursault’s Charmes Dessous Climat, covering a surface area of 0.24 hectares. The clay-limestone soils are crossed by veins of marl in some areas, and the plot is relatively unsloping, and facing south-east.

Understanding Louis Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Referts, Burgundy
Produced from sustainably grown Chardonnay grapes, the wine was fermented and aged in oak barrels with 20% new wood for one year, before being racked into stainless steel for a further six months. It is lightly filtered before bottling. The wine’s attractive aroma profile delivers fresh green apple and citrus peel, with slightly richer notes of pastry and almond paste. It is a direct and bright wine, with a medium to full body, lively acidity and an abundance of chalky minerality in the finish. William Kelley of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has described it as ‘glossily textural and incisive, with excellent concentration.’
