An introduction to Louis Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Combettes, Burgundy

Les Combettes is a 6.7-hectare vineyard located between Champ Canet above to the northwest, Les Referts further down the slope to the southeast, and Meursault's Charmes vineyard to the northeast. It is known for producing wines that combine the raciness and mineral-focus of Puligny with the roundness of Meursault which lies on the northern border of the climat. The terroir here is composed of thin marly soils with some clay, considered the ideal soil type for producing top-class Chardonnay.

Understanding Louis Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Combettes, Burgundy

This Chardonnay is fermented and aged in 20% new oak barrels for one year, before being racked into stainless steel for a further period of six months. The wine is lightly filtered before bottling. Its inviting aromas vary from buttered pear and white almond to beeswax and freshly baked croissant. On the palate it is supple and rounded, with a fleshy core of fruit, vivacious acidity and an extended finish. According to Burghound, this ‘lovely and understated effort should age gracefully’.
