An introduction to Louis Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Canet, Burgundy
Champ Canet is a patchwork Premier Cru climat in the northern sector of the Puligny-Montrachet, bordering Meursault. It measures 5.6 hectares and is situated mid-slope just above the Premier Cru vineyard of Les Combettes. It comprises multiple lieu-dit sites, with the eponymous Champ Canet being the largest section. It is separated by a line of scrubland from two small plots of vines known as ‘La Jaquelotte’ and the other an extension of Clos de la Garenne. It has similar soils to Perrières, with crumbly limestone bedrock covered over by a thin layer of stony marl. Today, the Carillon plot has 45-year-old vines covering a surface area of 0.55 hectares.

Understanding Louis Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Canet, Burgundy
This Champ Canet is made from sustainably grown Chardonnay grapes, fermented and aged in oak barrels with 20% new wood for one year. The wine is then racked into stainless steel for a further six months, and only lightly filtered before bottling. It has a stunning bouquet with notes of pastry cream, preserved lemon, white peach, and white flowers. It has medium to full body and an impressive texture balanced by vibrant acidity and a mineral edge in the persistent finish. When writing for The Wine Advocate, Neal Martin described it as ‘beautifully focused,’ ‘sophisticated and classy.’
