Francois Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Gain, Burgundy
An introduction to Francois Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Gain, Burgundy
Located at high altitude close to the border between St Aubin and Puligny Montrachet, Champ Gain is the second largest Premier Cru site in the latter appellation, located 350 metres above sea level on a slightly sloping site at the top of Mont Rachet. It has shallow limestone soils that produce wines with the archetypal minerality of some of Puligny Montrachet’s finest. The higher elevation of the vineyard imparts linearity to the wine, which has long ageing potential.

Understanding Francois Carillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Champ Gain, Burgundy
François Carillon owns two hectares in Champ Gain. Like all Domaine François Carillon wines, the grapes are manually harvested, sorted and fermented in 25% new oak for 12 months, followed by six months in stainless steel vats.Their 100% Chardonnay is rich and exceptionally well rounded, with ripe aromas of yellow peach and pear. While some of Carillion’s wines notably bridge the gap between the minerality of Montrachet and body of Meursault, the Champ Gain has a distinct near-oily texture that combines beautifully with a lightly mineral feel. The wines are balanced on the palate with a very long finish. According to Burghound, they offer ‘fine richness and density to the solidly powerful flavors’.
