An introduction to Domaine d'Auvenay, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Folatieres, Burgundy
The well-regarded Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Folatières is situated mid-slope, facing east, at the same elevation as the Grand Cru Le Montrachet. Although Pinot Noir is permitted in the vineyard, the wines are always 100% Chardonnay. Purchased in 1989, Domaine d’Auvenay owns a 0.27ha plot of extremely low yielding 60-year-old vines situated partway up the slope. Considered among the finest Premier Crus in the village, the production of this structured, immensely precise wine is very limited and often less than 850 bottles.

Understanding Domaine d'Auvenay, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Folatieres, Burgundy
Like all Bize-Leroy’s wines, the Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières comes from hand-picked, biodynamically farmed grapes. Employing a hands-off approach to winemaking, the aim is to produce wines that are expressive of their terroir. The Chardonnay is whole bunch pressed and fermented using wild yeasts in wooden vats with extended élevage on lees in oak barrels (100% new) before bottling unfined and unfiltered. This wine is imbued with layers of complexity, textural richness and a crisp minerality. Etended cellaring for 20+ years is recommended. The wine has been a firm critics’ favourite, with The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley writing about its 2015 vintage that ‘this is an incredibly classy Folatières that will reward patience’.
