An introduction to Arnaud Ente, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Referts, Burgundy

Les Referts is the closest area to Meursault’s esteemed Premier Cru Charmes, divided by the famous ‘Chemin des Moînes’ (the monks' path). The domaine’s vines were planted in 1965 and cover a surface area of 0.22 hectares. The clay-limestone soils are crossed by veins of marl in some areas, and the plot is relatively unsloping, facing east and west, and receiving ideal amounts of sunshine.

Understanding Arnaud Ente, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Referts, Burgundy

Produced from sustainably farmed Chardonnay grapes, this wine is fermented and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels with 20% new oak, followed by 6 months in stainless steel. It is bottled without filtration or fining. The wine’s deep and ripe bouquet offers petrol and apple compote amongst minerals, citrus, and just a faint hint of oak influence. The palate is sleek yet intense, with an impressive depth, texture and concentration that is balanced by a sense of precision. Meanwhile, Allen Meadows of Burghound has described it finish as ‘superbly long and impeccably well-balanced.’
