An introduction to Vincent Dancer, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Pezerolles, Burgundy

Planted only with Pinot Noir, Les Pézerolles is a Pommard Premier Cru vineyard in the Côte de Beaune close to the border with Beaune on stony marl soils that have a similar composition to Epenots. The fruit for this Premier Cru Pinot comes from a small plot just above Les Petits Épenots and Clos des Épeneaux. Situated in the middle of the hillside to the north of the appellation, the wines produced here are concentrated and intense, with bright acidity and a fine tannic structure. Dancer only makes about three barrels of Pézerolles each year, characterised with tremendous finesse. His Pézerolles reward extended cellaring for over ten years.

The sustainably farmed, hand-harvested fruit from organic vineyards is vinified with a non-interventionist approach. Following wild yeast fermentation in oak barrels with 100% destemmed fruit, malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, with Dancer eschewing the addition of sulfur. Following extended élevage for 18 months in oak barrels, the wine is blended and transferred to stainless steel tanks for further five to six months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Textural and wonderfully layered with fine tannins, the resulting wine bursts with ripe black fruit and violet florals, possessing an almost Volnay-like expression. The Wine Advocate’s William Kelly has described the 2019 vintage as ‘a charming, perfumed Pommard that is already hard to resist’.
