An introduction to Louis Latour, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Epenots, Burgundy

Les Épenots is a well-known and esteemed Premier Cru lieu-dit located in Pommard in eastern France’s Burgundy wine region. It comprises three Pinot Noir climats called Les Grands Épenots, Les Petits Épenots and Clos des Epeneaux that can be labelled with the individual vineyard or the wider Épenots name. The quality of this zone’s wines is such that it is widely regarded as a solid candidate for eventual promotion to Grand Cru status. The name "Épenots" derives from the French for “thorn” hinting at the character of the terrain prior to viticulture. The Domaine Louis Latour Pommard Les Épenots displays blackcurrant and mocha with gentle savoury hints and liquorice tones. Full, expansive and pleasingly tannic, this Premier Cru is suitable for seven to ten years of laying down.

Understanding Louis Latour, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Epenots, Burgundy

The domaine practices sustainable in its Epenots holding with Pinot Noir nourished by clay-limestone soils. The vines enjoy a southeasterly orientation on a gentle slope for gradual fruit ripening, resulting in balanced wines. Berries are carefully harvested by hand in a highly-selective process that ensures only the finest grapes are vinified. In the winery, this Premier Cru sees traditional fermentation in traditional open oak vats followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a creamy, soft mouthfeel. It is aged in 35% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for ten to 12 months to allow components to deepen for greater complexity. Wine Enthusiast has described this Les Épenots as “…expressive…”.
