Domaine de Montille, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Rugiens Bas, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine de Montille, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Rugiens Bas, Burgundy
The Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens-Bas cuvée by Domaine de Montille is sourced from a 1.2 hectare of Pinot Noir vines located in the Premier Cru designated vineyard of Les Rugiens in Pommard. The vineyard is divided into two climats, the lower of which Les Rugiens-Bas is generally considered to be superior due to the higher concentration of iron in the soil. Such terroir produces wines of firmness and length, and this bottling by Domaine de Montille offers great freshness amid a core of red-fruits and spice notes.

Understanding Domaine de Montille, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Rugiens Bas, Burgundy
The Domaine de Montille holdings in the Les Rugiens-Bas climat are farmed sustainably and in accordance with biodynamic principles and treatments. The grapes are hand-picked and mostly destemmed prior to alcoholic fermentation (though some whole bunches are included to add aromatic lift). Extraction is managed by a daily pigeage regime and elements of pre-and-post fermentation maceration. After pressing, the wine is matured in French oak barrels, of which between 10% and 30% are new, before bottling with only a light, non-sterile filtration. This is a powerful example of Premier Cru Pommard, showing the rich fruit profile so typical of the commune with a robust yet gourmande tannic structure.
