Domaine de Montille, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Grands Epenots, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine de Montille, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Grands Epenots, Burgundy
The Pommard Premier Cru Les Grands Epenots by Domaine de Montille is sourced from a tiny 0.22 hectare plot of Pinot Noir vines planted in the Les Grands Epenots vineyard just to the north of the village of Pommard. The Les Grands Epenots climat is so highly regarded that it is likely to be promoted to the first Pommard Grand Cru in the near future. The clay-limestone soil type and south-easterly aspect produce wines of unrivalled power in the commune. This wine by Domaine de Montille is demonstrative of such Grand Cru ambitions, offering silky, almost airy tannins and a complex flavour profile of black cherry, wild strawberry, quince and chocolate notes.

Understanding Domaine de Montille, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Grands Epenots, Burgundy
The old vines that comprise the Domaine de Montille Premier Cru Les Grands Epenots cuvée are farmed sustainably and in accordance with biodynamic principles, with much of the vineyard work conducted by hand. After an early picking date is selected to retain acidity, the grapes are hand-harvested and partially destemmed into wooden fermenters, where fermentation occurs with indigenous yeast for nearly three weeks. Subsequent élevage is conducted in French oak barrels and demi-muids, of which approximately 30% are new. The result is a wine that shows the quality and potential of the Les Grand Epenots terroir, offering a sophisticated and gourmande drinking experience that will evolve under cork for at least two decades.
