An introduction to Maison Roche de Bellene, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Aux Boudots, Burgundy

Situated at the northern end of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, bordering Vosne-Romanée, Aux Boudots is a Premier Cru vineyard producing red wines made from Pinot Noir. Lying mid-slope, soils here are similar to those of Aux Malconsorts with a gravelly limestone marl mixed with clay. The aspect here is conducive to long slow ripening, imbuing the fruit with a concentrated, complex flavour profile. With a network of growers across Burgundy’s best sites, Maison Roche de Bellene decides which specific parcels to use for each vintage, often combining fruit from more than one plot. With an emphasis on sustainable and organic farming, the fruit, or base wine come from old vines, planted on east-facing soils rich in clay and limestone at an elevation of 265m. The Production of Maison Roche de Bellene Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Boudots is limited and often less than 1,000 bottles.

Understanding Maison Roche de Bellene, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Aux Boudots, Burgundy

The cuvée is made from hand-harvested and carefully selected Pinot Noir grapes. A proportion of whole bunches is used during the indigenous yeast fermentation, followed by up to 18 months in oak barrel (30% to 50% new). Often bottled filtered but unfined (vintage dependant), this is a fragrant Aux Boudots, offering a core of ripe black fruits, notable spice and earthy minerality. As tannins can be firm in youth, the wine rewards extended cellaring upwards of 15 years. The Wine Enthusiast has praised the 2016 as ‘beautifully perfumed’, ‘a sumptuous wine with richness and aging potential’.
