An introduction to Louis Latour, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Les Damodes, Burgundy

Les Damodes is a Premier Cru vineyard situated in the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation found in eastern France’s iconic Burgundy wine region. The climat runs for half a mile, parallel to the tree line on the upper reaches of the Côte d'Or escarpment on the border with Vosne-Romanée. This long, thin vineyard is one of the largest Premier Cru climats in the appellation. Planted entirely with Pinot Noir, this southeast-facing vineyard is on a steep, slope with thin limestone soils which results in concentrated grapes. The name “Les Damodes” is connected to Druidesses that allegedly occupied this area and the mythical deities and fairies that accompanied them. Les Damode has a reputation for a well-structured, full-bodied wine that can be laid down for years. The Domaine Louis Latour Nuits Saint Georges Damodes displays a spicy black cherry with toasty hints in a generous mouth with silky tannins and liquorice tones closing with a fresh finish. This Les Damodes is ideal for seven to ten years of cellaring.

Understanding Louis Latour, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Les Damodes, Burgundy

The domaine tends to Pinot Noir with an easterly aspect for gentle, gradual fruit ripening resulting in elegant wines. The vines grow on thin limestone-clay soils, making the plants work hard for nourishment for high-quality, concentrated fruit. Berries are carefully hand-harvested in a highly-selective process that ensures only the finest fruit is vinified. In the winery, this finessed Pinot Noir undergoes alcoholic fermentation in traditional, Burgundian open oak vats followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a creamy, soft mouthfeel. It is aged in 40% new, medium-toasted oak barrels for eight to ten months to allow components to balance and deepen.
