Les Saint-Georges is among the most highly esteemed and oldest of the 41 Premier Cru vineyards found in Burgundy’s Nuits-Saint-Georges. The Pinot Noir from the 7.5-hectare vineyard is so acclaimed that the climat is widely regarded as being of Grand Cru quality in all but name. Members of the local wine community are actively trying to have Les Saint-Georges promoted to the top Burgundy wine status. This Premier Cru site, first planted in the year 1000, is situated on the boundary between the communes Premeaux-Prissey and the Nuits-Saint-Georges village itself. It faces southeast and its gently sloping, varied terrain is largely composed of the limestone-clay soils in which Pinot Noir thrives. Domaine Forey Père et Fils Domaine Forey Père Nuits Saint Georges Les Saint-Georges reveals layers of spicy black fruit on the palate, with hints of tar and liquorice. Integrated tannins, a good backbone of acidity and a long, powerful finish make this Premier Cru suitable for over ten years of cellaring.

The domaine tends Pinot Noir vines planted on an aspect that allows steady and gentle fruit ripening. All fruit is hand-harvested for a tailored selection of the best grapes and to protect them from damaging oxidation prior to vinification. With a focus on promoting biodiversity, manmade chemicals are used in minimal amounts. Following cold-soaking and fermentation, this Premier Cru wine matures in 228-litre barriques for increased oak-to-wine contact. The percentage of new oak varies from vintage to vintage. No fining or filtration takes place to preserve the unique vintage and terroir expression. According to Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, ‘this is stunning’.
