An introduction to Domaine Ponsot, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
Monts Luisants is a Premier Cru appellation for principally white wines situated on the upper slopes of the hillsides above Morey-Saint-Denis. Monts Luisants is perhaps best known for the quality of the Aligoté grown in the vineyard, of which the monopole Clos des Mont Luisants, owned by Domaine Ponsot, is the very best example. Many of the vines in the Clos are over 100 years old, with the majority planted in 1911.

Understanding Domaine Ponsot, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes, Burgundy
The monopole Clos des Mont Luisants is farmed largely organically, with an average vine age of 95 years, planted at a high density of 11,000 vines per hectare. This, combined with the thin layer of limestone topsoil, characteristic of the vineyard, encourages deep vine root penetration yielding small, highly concentrated Aligoté berries. These are hand-picked and the whole bunches gently pressed into old barrels where fermentation occurs with natural yeasts. Subsequent élevage is conducted in the same neutral oak for sixteen months. The Premier Cru Clos des Mont Luisants is a unique wine, showing great fruit concentration of apricot and citrus fruits supported by a vibrant acidity, with the ability to develop a rich, honeyed character after careful cellaring of ten years or more.
