An introduction to Domaine Forey Pere & Fils, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Burgundy

Morey-Saint-Denis is a commune in the Côte de Nuits sub-region of Burgundy in eastern France. It encompasses 20 Premier Cru sites covering about 33 hectares of its entire 140 hectares. Most wines from this appellation are made from Pinot Noir, while a small amount are white wines. The Premier Cru status Pinot Noir are crafted under very strict local appellation rules. The Premier Cru sites lie in a strip of land across the lower mid-slope of the Côte d'Or escarpment where vines benefit from well-drained soils. The old-vine Domaine Forey Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée Morey Saint-Denis Premier Cru displays dense layers of spicy black fruit in a fragrant medium body with oaky-tobacco hints, earthy notes and grippy tannins. The wine is suitable for upwards of seven years of cellaring.

Understanding Domaine Forey Pere & Fils, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Burgundy

Domaine Forey Père et Fils cultivates Pinot Noir from two Premier Cru parcels for its Morey Saint-Denis: Clos Baulet and Les Blanchards. The vines were planted in the 1970s on well-draining, rich limestone and marlstone soils. Biodiversity is promoted throughout these vineyards, with the use of manmade chemicals kept to a minimum. All fruit is hand-harvested for a careful selection of the best grapes and to protect them from oxidation prior to vinification. Vinification is 50% whole bunch with the aim to achieve good tannic balance. Following cold-soaking and fermentation, this Premier Cru wine matures in 228-litre barriques for increased oak-to-wine contact. The percentage of new oak varies from vintage to vintage. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
