An introduction to Maison Louis Latour, Meursault Premier Cru, Blagny, Burgundy

Meursault Blagny is a Premier Cru zone comprising four vineyards in the Côte de Beaune subregion of eastern France’s Burgundy wine region. It covers Chardonnay wines made from Premier Cru vineyards around the village of Blagny within the boundaries of Meursault. Blagny, which was first cultivated by industrious monks in the 12th century, is found on the cusp of the Côte d'Or escarpment. It is challenging to cultivate but benefits greatly from its favourable sun aspect. Classic Meursault Blagny wine is relatively full-bodied thanks to winery techniques that include French oak maturation. The Domaine Louis Latour Meursault Blagny boasts fragrant, fresh acacia flower and brioche in a pleasingly tense palate of spicy citrus and melon with smoky hints of grilled almond. It is ideal for six to eight years of cellaring.

In line with its philosophy of environmental care, the domaine cultivates its Blagny Chardonnay with sustainable methods on well-draining stony limestone-marl soils. To preserve the quality of the fruit, harvest is made by hand for a highly-selective process that ensures only the finest berries are vinified. In the winery traditional fermentation in oak barrels is followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a soft, textured mouthfeel. It is aged in 35% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the Louis Latour in-house cooperage for eight to ten months to allow components to unfurl for greater depth and complexity.
