An introduction to Louis Latour, Meursault Premier Cru, Genevrieres, Burgundy

Les Genevrières is a Premier Cru climat in the Meursault appellation located in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune region in eastern France. Found at the southern end of the Meursault commune, this large vineyard is split into two lieux-dits that have slightly differing soils and are planted entirely with the Chardonnay grape. As with much Chardonnay from Meursault, Les Genevrières offers among the finest expressions of the variety in the world. The name “Genevrières” comes from the French word for “Juniper”, a shrub that grew widely in the area before being replaced by vines. Wines from this site typically display full buttery almond and hazelnut notes in a body of fine citrus. The Domaine Louis Latour Meursault Genevrières boasts lemony peach, honey and almond in a generous, persistent palate with a mineral-rich finish. This Premier Cru can be laid down to age for seven to ten years for added complexity.

Understanding Louis Latour, Meursault Premier Cru, Genevrieres, Burgundy

On terroir which is a mix of stony marl and limestone soils, Les Genevrières vines are farmed with sustainable agricultural methods. The excellent terrain and southeasterly exposure ensure the cultivation of top-tier fruit. To preserve their finesse, the grapes are carefully harvested by hand in a highly-selective process that ensures only the finest are vinified. In the winery, Domaine Louis Latour’s Meursault Generières sees traditional fermentation in oak followed by complete malolactic fermentation for a creamy, soft mouthfeel. It is aged in 50% new, medium-toasted oak barrels from the in-house cooperage for eight to ten months to allow components to deepen for greater depth and complexity.
