An introduction to Buisson-Charles, Meursault Premier Cru, Charmes, Burgundy
With 35 hectares planted, Charmes is the largest Premier Cru in Meursault. It is divided into three sub-zones, with the lower part producing wines of more intensity, the middle part – more vibrancy and tension, and the upper part – extremely concentrated and aromatic profile. This is due to the gently sloping, stony area, a clay-limestone substrate drawing roots deeply into the soil, and high exposure to the sun. The Buisson-Charles estate owns a small plot covering 1,800 square meters located in the Charmes Du Dessus du Climat, close to Genevrières and just below Grande Perrières. About 1,000 bottles are produced every year.

Understanding Buisson-Charles, Meursault Premier Cru, Charmes, Burgundy
The Chardonnay vines are farmed organically, and the must fermented and aged for 17 months in 228 litre casks with 20% new oak. Closer in style to the Meursault of the past, the wines possess a viscous texture and a vibrant citrusy acidity, blending the tactile honeyed sweetness of a Château d'Yquem with the dryness of the driest Chablis Premier Crus. The winemakers consider their version as powerful as a Montrachet. The wine has been consistently scored highly by major critics, with Allen Meadows of Burghound praising its ripeness, precision and harmony.
