An introduction to Dugat-Py, Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy

Mazoyères-Chambertin is a Grand Cru vineyard located in the Gevrey-Chambertin commune of the Côte du Nuits sub-region in eastern France’s iconic Burgundy wine region. Planted entirely to the Pinot Noir variety, this vineyard covers 18.6 hectares. Burgundy vinicultural laws allow wines from this site to be labelled Charmes-Chambertin, a somewhat more famous Grand Cru climat neighbouring Mazoyères to the north. The labelling choice is at the discretion of each producer. The appellation was created in 1937. The Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru displays bold, precise black cherry and blueberry notes in an energetic medium-bodied mouth with fine, chalky tannins and a fresh explosive finish. Well-built and complex, this Burgundy Grand Cru is generally suitable for up to three decades of cellaring and sometimes more. The wine boasts high scores from various critics, including 98-points for its 2018 and 2019 vintages from Tim Atkin MW. The domaine’s annual production totals 800 to 1,000 bottles.

Understanding Dugat-Py, Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru, Burgundy

Mazoyères-Chambertin is situated in the south of Gevrey-Chambertin’s belt of Grand Cru vineyards and is made up of shallow stony, limestone soils with layers of iron and chalk. Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py cultivates just over three-quarters of a hectare of Pinot Noir vines that date back to 1980. The domaine implements organic viticulture. The winery is guided by a minimal-interventionist philosophy, with fruit fermented in stainless steel tanks using solely ambient yeasts. This along with non-filtration allows the distinct terroir and vintage character to shine through in each wine. This Burgundy Grand Cru matures for 16 to 18 months in 100% new oak. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has described the Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru as ‘outstanding’.
