Domaine Fourrier, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieille Vigne, Burgundy

Domaine Fourrier, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieille Vigne, Burgundy
An introduction to Domaine Fourrier, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieille Vigne, Burgundy
Griotte-Chambertin is a Grand Cru vineyard in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits sub-region. Residing on a slope which faces slightly northeast means that the vines have less exposure to the morning sunshine and ripen slower than those planted on other slopes. Contrary to the reputation of Gevrey-Chambertin wines as muscular and rigid, the wines of Griotte-Chambertin are renowned for their balanced nature. There is consistency in quality and style across the vineyard, due to the limited area and production. As such, these wines occupy the pantheon of the region’s most collectable. The soils of Griotte-Chambertin are stony and well-drained, with chalky topsoil covering a deeper, rocky base. This confluence of characteristics and factors lead to a fresh, delicate style of Pinot Noir.

Understanding Domaine Fourrier, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Vieille Vigne, Burgundy
The Domaine Fourrier Griotte Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is a Grand Cru wine produced from 100% Pinot Noir. Griotte-Chambertin is the only Grand Cru belonging to the domaine, situated directly below Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. The vines of the Fourrier plot in Griotte-Chambertin were planted in 1928. The vines are de-budded prior to flowering, rejecting the practice of green harvesting, in the belief that old vines are balanced enough to reach adequate ripeness and instil a complex flavour profile. Fourrier exclusively uses old oak barrels for maturation, avoiding new oak as much as possible. More recently, they have experimented with the use of amphorae, especially when navigating production in warmer vintages. This is a critically acclaimed wine, Jasper Morris MW awarding scores of over 95-points to the consecutive vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020.
