The village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, is renowned for its production of some of the world’s most celebrated wines. It is home to no fewer than nine Grand Cru vineyards, comfortably more than any other village of Burgundy. Production across the appellation numbers two million annually, covering all the Premier Cru vineyards, though exclusive of the numbers of Grand Cru bottlings. With a reputation as Burgundy’s most full-bodied, intense and structured wines, the wines of Gevrey-Chambertin are also known to be tightly wound in their youth, with well-made examples capable of lasting decades in the bottle, softening and improving throughout the years. The Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes of Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is an unclassified growth, with the age of the vines (over 30 years) lending intensity of aromas and flavours. Limited yields add further depth and complexity, revealing the unique characteristics of the terroir.

Like the majority of wines produced by Domaine Sylvie Esmonin, the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is composed of Pinot Noir, with a significant proportion of whole bunches used in the fermentation. The wine ages in predominantly new oak barrels for a period of 18 months. Critics like Neal Martin and Jasper Morris MW have consistently rated vintages of the domaine’s Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes above 90 points, complimenting the wine’s minerality and ageing potential.
